Gender wealth gap: An empirical study in Vietnam

Abstract:

Unlike gender income gap, which has been plentifully studied in both developed and developing countries, studies on gender wealth gap are limited especially in developing countries due to the limit of households’ data from the developing countries such as Vietnam. Using Machado-Mata decomposition to examine VHLSS, this study analyzed the gender wealth inequality for sole and then partner Vietnam’s household in 2014. Findings from this study show that among partnered heads, the gap favors female across the distribution of the data utilized in this study. This is in contrast with the findings achieved from the sole heads where the gap favors male. At the lower quantiles, the gender wealth gap is primarily associated with differing returns to covariate for both sole and partnered heads. At the median and upper tail of distribution, gender differences in endowments (education level and living area) drive the gap.
