Abstract:
Given increasing demand for food, and that land is limited while there is many competitive uses, there is a need to substitute land by other inputs in agriculture. The main objective of this study is to measure the substitutability between the inputs of grain production. In doing so, this study applies the two-level nested constant elasticity of substitution (CES) production function. Several nest structures are examined to measure the elasticity of factor substitution. Data is from the General Statistics Office of Vietnam (GSO) and Vietnam Household Living Standards Survey (VHLSS) in 2006 and 2011.
This study found that there are substitutions among the inputs of grain production, including land, labor, machinery and fertilizer. Particularly, machinery and fertilizer are highly suitable to substitute for land and labor. Machinery is the best substitute for land, while fertilizer substitutes for labor.
